ABC News to Pay $15 Million to Settle Defamation Suit Filed by Donald Trump
Network Apologizes for Inaccurate Remarks About Sexual Abuse Case
ABC News has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit filed by President-elect Donald Trump. The lawsuit stemmed from inaccurate on-air comments made by anchor George Stephanopoulos regarding a sexual abuse case involving Trump.
The network and Stephanopoulos will also issue public apologies for the comments during a live interview on “This Week” with Representative nancy Mace, according to documents filed on Saturday.
The settlement requires ABC news to donate $15 million to a fund dedicated to a presidential foundation and museum for Trump. The broadcaster will also pay an additional $1 million in legal fees.
Trump filed the lawsuit in federal court in Miami days after the network aired a segment in which Stephanopoulos repeatedly misstated the verdicts in two civil lawsuits filed against Trump by writer E Jean Carroll.
While Trump was found liable for sexual abuse – a separate legal transgression from rape under New York law – in a 2023 case, he was not found liable for rape.Carroll initially accused Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s at a Manhattan department store. In the first of the two lawsuits to go to trial, a jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll, ordering him to pay her $5 million.
in a second trial in January, Trump was found liable on additional defamation claims and ordered to pay Carroll $83.3 million. Trump is appealing both verdicts.
The settlement comes one day after Judge Lisette M Reid requested depositions from both Trump and Stephanopoulos.
This is the latest legal victory for Trump since his victory in the November 5 presidential election.
Separately, US Special Counsel Jack Smith has paused a federal case concerning Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. However, Trump still faces racketeering charges on the same issue in a Georgia case.
A judge has also indefinitely postponed sentencing in Trump’s May conviction in the hush money case, the only criminal charges against him to go to trial.
