The first edition of the Foire Europe-Afrique d’Abidjan is scheduled to bring together up to 500,000 visitors at the Parc des expositions d’Abidjan from December 14 to 19, 2026. The international event aims to serve as a strategic bilateral platform connecting European and African markets. En tant que leader économique de la sous-région, la Côte d’Ivoire possède des atouts considérables qui en font le lieu idéal pour accueillir cet événement d’envergure, stated Chantal Kouassi, who also launched an appeal to embassies to ensure a strong mobilization of European and African states.

Sub-Saharan Africa Promotes Local Processing to Reduce Food Imports

Professor Simplice Dion, president of the scientific committee for the fair, stated during the October briefing that sub-Saharan Africa imports more than $35 billion in food products annually. He noted that the fair addresses this paradox by promoting local processing rather than exporting raw land yield to fund food imports, using the expression L’Afrique ne doit plus exporter sa terre pour importer sa table.

Côte d’Ivoire maintains a position as the leading global producer of cocoa and cashews, alongside significant production in rubber, oil palm, and cotton. These specific sectors account for over 40 percent of national export revenues. However, local processing rates remain below 30 percent for cocoa. The government’s Plan National de Développement targets raising local agricultural transformation to 50 percent by 2030, utilizing industrial zones in Yopougon, San Pedro, and Bouaké. Face to this situation, the Ivorian government has inscribed agrarian industrialization as a strategic priority in its national development planning to raise local processing to 50 percent by 2030.

National Development Roadmap Projects High Private Sector Participation

The Ministry of Agriculture provides institutional patronage for the fair, while the Ministry of Plan and Development participated through representative Sidiki Kouyaté. Kouyaté stated at the launch that the initiative aligns with the national development roadmap for 2026 to 2030, which projects 70.2 percent private sector participation within a total investment framework of 114,838.5 billion FCFA.

The rollout of the African Continental Free Trade Area acts as a complementary market driver. The agreement creates a potential market of 1.3 billion consumers with a combined gross domestic product exceeding $3,400 billion. The Abidjan event integrates ten distinct thematic poles, including agro-industry, green transition, agricultural machinery, finance and investments, health, etc., to facilitate business-to-business partnerships and technology transfer between European and African small and medium enterprises and multinationals. According to Chantal Kouassi, the contribution of European technologies and know-how must serve as a lever to stimulate investments, catalyze BtoB partnerships, and accelerate technology transfer for the benefit of local SMEs and multinationals.

FEAA 2026 Integrates Digital Technology and African Union Goals

The FEAA 2026 intends to align with the food self-sufficiency dynamic driven by the African Union, specifically through the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme. Beyond exhibitions, the fair will feature panels, start-up competitions, gastronomic demonstrations, and cultural activities. The event also opens to complementary sectors including digital technology and information technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, traceability platforms, and agricultural e-commerce, alongside health and nutrition encompassing pharmacopoeia, food safety, and HealthTech, as well as manufacturing industries covering packaging, equipment, and materials, and commerce and services including logistics, finance, and insurance.
