Actor Song Joong-ki Discusses His Character in ‘Hwaran’ at Open Conversation Event

Actor Song Joong-ki recently discussed his role in the film ‘Hwaran’ during an open conversation event held at the Busan Cinema Center. Joining director Kim Chang-hoon, as well as fellow actors Hong Sa-bin and Kim Hyeong-seo (BB), Song shared insights into his character and the filmmaking process.

Expressing his nerves about greeting the domestic audience, Song Joong-ki stated, “I am more nervous than I was at the Cannes International Film Festival. The current state of Korean films and theaters adds to the pressure, but it feels good to be able to say hello with ‘Hwaran’.”

Regarding his portrayal of ‘Chigun’, the actor explained, “We aimed for a character that felt alive despite his circumstances. I tried to convey a sense of helplessness and stillness through my expressions. Chigun had a broken ear and a scar, which added to his depth.”

Delving into the real-life dynamics on set, Song revealed, “When I first met Hong Sa-bin and had a beer, I realized that our actual relationship might mirror that of our characters. Drawing from this connection, I approached the role with a protective older brother mindset. The script itself hinted at a deep bond between Chigun and the other characters.”

Kim Hyeong-seo, another member of the cast, also praised Song Joong-ki’s portrayal. “When I saw Cheegan’s eyes on set, I was both impressed and intimidated. I thought he was a very cool actor and saw him as someone to learn from.”

Fellow actor Hong Sa-bin shared his gratitude for the guidance he received from his senior colleagues. “Many seniors and directors, including Song Joong-ki, advised me to emphasize my reactions rather than over-preparing.
