The Baltimore Orioles’ injury woes⁢ deepened saturday‍ as catcher Adley Rutschman, a key player in their lineup, landed on the injured list for the first time in his career. An MRI revealed a strained‍ left oblique for Rutschman, 27. The announcement came shortly⁤ before the Orioles faced the New York Yankees.

Interim manager Tony⁤ Mansolino ⁤acknowledged the impact of losing such a⁣ durable player.”He’s been super ⁤durable, especially⁢ for⁣ a⁣ catcher,” Mansolino ⁤said, expressing hope for a swift return.

Rutschman initially was slated to be⁢ the‍ designated hitter Friday but was scratched after experiencing discomfort ‍during batting practise. To‍ fill the void, the ‍Orioles recalled Maverick Handley, who will support Gary Sanchez⁣ behind the plate.

This ‍season, Rutschman is batting .227 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs across 68⁣ games. His consistent presence has been a valuable asset‍ to the team, having played in 113 games⁣ after his debut in May 2022,⁣ followed by 154 games in 2023 and 148 last season. ⁤The⁣ team hopes his role as a durable catcher returns soon.

Adding to Baltimore’s challenges, infielder Jordan Westburg left Saturday’s game against the Yankees in the third inning. Westburg injured his left index finger while⁣ stealing second base, despite wearing a protective glove. he was visibly in pain after the play.

Westburg, who was the designated⁢ hitter, walked‍ in ‍the first inning and then stole second during ⁤gunnar Henderson’s at-bat. Rookie Coby Mayo replaced him in the third. X-rays after Baltimore’s 9-0 loss came back negative.

“Jammed his finger‍ stealing second⁤ base,” Mansolino said.⁢ “Sprained,‍ strained, something along those lines. Hoping it’s⁣ day-to-day ⁢right now…probably in a few days he’ll be OK,maybe earlier.”

Westburg,26,had previously missed over ⁤a month due to a left hamstring ⁤strain, only returning on June 10. He’s currently hitting .229 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs in 34 games.‍ The team is⁢ evaluating the extent of the injury and its impact⁣ on his role on the team.

“All I know is that there’s no ⁤fracture on the X-ray, so trying to stay optimistic in that sense,” westburg said.

Westburg earned an All-Star selection last season, batting .264 with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs.

What’s next

The Orioles will assess both ⁣Rutschman and Westburg’s injuries in the coming ⁢days to determine their availability for upcoming games as they ‍continue ⁣their series.
