Following Kara Young’s recent Tony wins, another milestone is being celebrated on Broadway. Adrienne Warren now stars in The Last Five Years, a beloved musical finally making its debut on the Great White Way. “This show has been around for over 20 years,” warren said.”I wish I weren’t the first Black woman to play this role in a full production of this show, but now that I am here, I am honored.”
The Last Five Years charts the relationship between Jamie, a novelist, and cathy, an actress. The story unfolds with Jamie’s perspective starting at the beginning and Cathy’s starting at the breakup. The two-person show features Warren alongside pop star Nick Jonas.
Directed by Whitney white, the production showcases Warren, a Tony Award winner for her portrayal of Tina Turner in TINA – The Tina Turner Musical.Warren said, “I have to admit…It is indeed very strange doing a show with only two people, but the show is a 90-minute rollercoaster ride and there’s never a dull moment.” her vocals capture Cathy’s emotional journey.

Warren enjoys working with Jonas. “Nick and I love to find new ways to make the show fun and fresh, even if it’s just for each other,” Warren stated. “He is the greatest teammate I could ask for on this journey and I am officially a Nick jonas fan for life.”
Warren brings a unique perspective to the role of Cathy in The Last Five Years. The themes of love and loss resonate universally, gaining new depth with a Black woman in the role.
“the story doesn’t change, but I believe my interpretation of this character is different as I walk through the world in a Black body,” Warren said. “I express my vulnerability differently, and my strength and resilience are inherently a part of Cathy’s journey. Every obstacle she faces in her relationship and career may affect her, but at the end of the day, she is going to be okay.”

Warren hopes her role inspires other Black women. “I hope my being here inspires other women to feel invited to learn this score and play this role,” she said.
The Last Five Years, a Broadway musical, is playing at the hudson theatre in New York City through June 22.
