Spain’s Job Market Sets New Records in May
Spain’s labor market achieved new milestones in May,with Social Security affiliations reaching a record 21,784,375,according to data released by the Ministry of Social Security. This represents an increase of 195,736 people. simultaneously occurring, the number of unemployed individuals fell to 2,454,883, the lowest figure as July 2008.
Over the past year,the number of Social security contributors has risen by 462,581,a 2.17% increase. Women’s employment has been a significant driver, exceeding 10.3 million for the first time. Unemployment has decreased by 152,967 people, or 5.87%, year-over-year.
Minister Elma Saiz has set a new employment target of reaching 23 million members by 2027. though, the May increase in affiliations is lower than those recorded in the same month between 2021 and 2024. It marks the smallest increase in affiliations for May since 2013, excluding the pandemic year.
The hospitality sector led job creation, adding 76,120 affiliations, a 4.9% increase. Administrative activities followed with 22,021 new affiliates (up 1.5%), and trade added 9,346 jobs (up 0.3%).
The unemployment rate compares favorably with previous years.While slightly lower than in May 2024,it exceeds the figures for 2023. Since 1996, unemployment has decreased in every May except for 2008 and 2020.
The services sector accounted for three-quarters of the overall decrease in unemployment. Specifically, the sector reduced unemployment by 42,930 (down 2.3%), followed by construction (down 3%), industry (down 2.3%), and agriculture (down 2.8%).
Unemployment fell slightly more among women, with a decrease of 29,066 compared to April. The total number of unemployed women stood at 1,486,421, the lowest as October 2008.
