what: 6.1‍ magnitude earthquake
⁤ ⁢
Where: Southeastern Afghanistan (Paktika & Khost provinces)

‍ ⁤

The earthquake triggered landslides⁤ and‍ damaged or destroyed thousands of homes, notably in rural, mountainous areas. The remoteness of the affected regions hampered rescue efforts and the⁣ delivery of aid. Initial reports ⁢indicated a high number ‍of⁣ casualties, with the death toll continuing to rise in the ⁢days following the disaster. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the earthquake affected over⁤ 360,000 people UN OCHA.

The ⁣Human Cost

The earthquake’s impact was particularly severe due to the region’s vulnerability and pre-existing challenges. ⁣ Afghanistan has been grappling with decades of conflict, poverty, and drought, leaving communities⁢ with limited resources and infrastructure. Many‍ homes in ⁣the affected areas were‍ constructed from mud bricks, making ‍them highly susceptible to collapse during seismic activity.

Eyewitness accounts paint a harrowing picture of the devastation. Mehboob, a resident of a small village in Paktika province, described the moment the earthquake struck: “When the earthquake happened, my 13-year-old son ⁢Nasib Ullah was sleeping next to me. I woke up, got out of bed, and started looking for the torch. Then, suddenly, the whole room moved ⁣from the falling rocks. When I tried to⁤ reach ⁢my son, the wall and the floor ⁤slid‍ down, and I couldn’t ⁤catch him.”‍ He further ⁢stated, “[It was] worse than the day of judgement.” ⁤ He recounted how houses collapsed and boulders tumbled down the mountainside, creating a scene of chaos and darkness. ⁣ Many survivors reported⁢ injuries, including broken ribs and legs.

As of June 24, 2022, the United⁢ Nations reported ‍at least 770 deaths and over⁢ 1,500 injuries UN⁣ News.
