Afghan women to be banned from playing sport

The Taliban have been cracking down on Afghanistan since the interim government came to power. Women were barred from participating in sports. A Taliban spokesman said sports that display body parts would not be allowed.

Taliban Cultural Commission Deputy Chief O’Alham Dulillah Wasik has made his position clear. Wasiq says cricket is not for women who are Muslims. Cricket is all about covering the face and wearing special clothes. This is not suitable for women who are Muslims. Wasiq points out that videos and pictures of it will be spread on social media.

Australia has withdrawn from a Test cricket match against Afghanistan in protest of the Taliban regime’s treatment of women.
