Afghanistan made history by defeating South Africa by six wickets in the first ODI, and continued their dominance in the second match, sealing the three-match series with a record 177 runs in their ODI history.
Afghanistan’s Solid Batting Performance
The solid batting of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rahmat Shah, and Azmatullah Omarzai saw Afghanistan reach their sixth highest total in ODI history, scoring 311 runs for 4 wickets.
Rashid Khan and Nangyalia Kharote’s Whirlwind Performance
Rashid Khan and Nangyalia Kharote showed a whirlwind performance, taking 9 wickets together. Rashid won the Fifer for the fifth ODI on his 26th birthday.
Afghanistan’s Batting Highlights
Hasmatullah Shahidi won the toss and made no mistake with batting. Gurbaz scored 88 runs in the opening partnership with Riaz Hasan. Rahmat gave Gurbaz great company after losing Riaz (29), scoring his 29th half-century.
Gurbaz scored his seventh ODI century en route to a pair of 101 runs for the second wicket, becoming Afghanistan’s highest centurion with 107 balls, leaving behind Shahzad.
Rahmat got out after scoring 50 runs off 66 balls. Omarzai played a cameo innings leaving Mohammad Nabi at the other end. The duo’s 40-ball 55-run partnership was broken on the departure of Nabi (13).
Omarzai scored his fastest fifty in 32 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes, leaving the field unbeaten on 86 off 50 balls with 5 fours and 6 sixes.
South Africa’s Batting Struggles
Temba Bavuma hit four on the first ball of the target, starting aggressively to win. Bavuma (38) departed for 73 runs in the 14th over. Omarzai breaks this opening pair.
In the 18th over, Tony D’Georgi (31) was gloved by Rashid Ikram Alikhil. Then his goespin caught South Africa. Kharote joined.
The Proteas could not stand up to the spin of the two. Rashid took the fifth wicket by bowling Markram (21), who became the fourth batsman for them to reach double figures.
Proteas all out for 134 runs in 34.2 overs.
