Darcy’s Role: Injury Comeback Boosts Bulldogs’ AFL Attack
Updated June 12, 2025
Western Bulldogs star Sam Darcy is set to make a swift return to the AFL field after recovering from a knee injury initially feared to be season-ending. The 21-year-old key forward’s comeback provides a important boost to the team’s attacking options.
Darcy sustained the injury during the Bulldogs’ round six victory over St kilda. Initial assessments suggested a torn anterior cruciate ligament, potentially requiring surgery adn a lengthy absence. Tho, he avoided surgery, diagnosed rather with an impaction fracture and associated ligament damage, sidelining him for only six games.
Coach Luke Beveridge confirmed Darcy’s return for Thursday night’s game against St Kilda at Marvel Stadium. “He’s done a really scrupulous and professional job on rehabilitation from that injury,” beveridge said Wednesday. “We welcome him back and look forward to having him part of tomorrow night.”
Before the injury, Darcy had a strong start to the year, kicking 14 goals in five games. His presence as a 205-centimeter aerial threat will bolster the Bulldogs’ forward line as they seek to rebound from a recent loss to Hawthorn. Beveridge indicated Darcy will also see some ruck time. “But he’s an enormous threat [in the forward line] and we saw the way that his early part of the season was evolving and his presence,” Beveridge said.
Beveridge added that Darcy’s presence would help prevent intercept marks, which hurt the team in the previous game against Hawthorn. The Bulldogs also recently announced a two-year contract extension for Beveridge, keeping him with the club through 2027. He hopes captain Marcus Bontempelli will also extend his contract soon.
What’s next
Darcy’s return and his role in the forward line will be closely watched as the Bulldogs aim to improve their standing in the AFL. The team hopes his presence will lead to a more potent attack and fewer intercept opportunities for opponents.
