After Monaco’s loss, Paris Saint-Germain wins the league title for the 12th time in its history

Paris Saint-Germain won the French Premier League title for the third time in a row, and the 12th in its history, enhancing its record on Sunday evening, after second-place Monaco lost 3-2 to Olympique Lyonnais.

Paris Saint-Germain, which missed the chance to win the title on Saturday with a 3-3 draw with Le Havre, has 70 points, 12 points behind Monaco with 3 matches remaining.

In turn, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of Paris Saint-Germain, told his club’s website: “Winning the league is amazing, but achieving the title for the 12th time is even more special for everyone associated with Paris Saint-Germain.”

He added: “We will enjoy this moment as a family, and we will continue to work hard match after match until the last moment of the season.”

Monaco was the only team that could prevent Saint-Germain from winning the title, but their weak hopes were dashed in Lyon with their first defeat in nine matches, despite their early lead.

The visitors scored just over 20 seconds after the start, with Wissam Ben Yedder scoring from a Takumi Minamino cross at the back post, but Monaco trailed 2-1 within 25 minutes thanks to goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Said Benrahma.

Ben Yedder equalized the score for his team again after the hour mark from a stray ball inside the penalty area from Youssef Fofana, but it was Lyon who scored the winning goal six minutes before the end when Fofana shot from outside the penalty area.

After Saturday’s draw that postponed the title celebrations, Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique seemed unconcerned, reassured that the huge goal difference meant that his third consecutive league title was guaranteed.

The Spanish coach said: “We are champions. I don’t care if there is a celebration or not.”

He added: “We have a goal difference of +29 in second place, and I already feel that we are the champions. Even if we do not score any more points, we will be the champions.”

The Spaniard, who took over as coach of Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season, proved this to be true as the team won its tenth title in 12 seasons without having to play any other match.

The champions suffered only one defeat in the league this season, which was against Nice last September. The team started the season slowly, but once it took the lead in the 12th round, it did not look back.

Saint-Germain was 3-1 behind against relegation-threatened Le Havre on Saturday, but Goncalo Ramos’ late goal in stoppage time saved a point for the team and extended the unbeaten streak in the league to 26 matches, but the coach said that does not worry him.

Luis Enrique said: “I don’t care if I lose, that goal gave us the league title.”

He added: “This is in addition to the anger I was feeling because we did not play much. We are missing two titles, and we will do everything in our power to get them.”

Paris Saint-Germain continues its march in the Champions League, and will also face Lyon in the French Cup final, in what could be the club’s best season ever.

The team will compete in the local cup final next May, and is looking forward to the Champions League semi-finals after failing to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament during the past two seasons.

Striker Kylian Mbappé (25 years old) will leave at the end of the current season, and he wants to leave at his highest level, and this season is indeed his best in terms of scoring goals, after he scored 43 goals in all competitions.

Winning the Champions League has been a goal for Paris Saint-Germain for a long time, but few expect this to happen in the coach’s first season.

Now that the league title has been secured, the quest to achieve the treble continues, starting next Wednesday with the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Borussia Dortmund.
