Again protests against refugee accommodation in Upahl

A planned refugee accommodation in the town of Upahl continues to cause discussions. Now there have been protests again.

Around 100 people demonstrated on Saturday against the construction of refugee accommodation in Upahl in Northwest Mecklenburg. They gathered on a street on the outskirts of the village and showed signs with inscriptions such as “Stop admissions immediately!”, “We miss democracy” or “Upahl not asked”. A police spokeswoman said it was a peaceful gathering. The participants are “consistently bourgeois clientele”.

There have been protests against the district’s project since the beginning of last year. In mid-July, the building supervisory authority issued the building permit for the construction of temporary accommodation for asylum seekers in the commercial area of the 500-inhabitant village. Instead of the previously planned 400, a maximum of 250 places are to be created for refugees. The foundation work for the accommodation was resumed on Tuesday. The first containers are to be set up at the beginning of August.

The administrative court in Schwerin initially rejected a construction freeze on Friday. The municipality had requested that the construction work approved by the district building administration be suspended until the objection to the accommodation had been decided. According to the court, the Ministry of the Interior and Building in Schwerin and the district should comment by August 10th. A court decision is not expected before mid-August.
