Brigadier General Qomars Porhashemi of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was killed in Syria during recent clashes. These clashes were initiated by opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, against Syrian government positions.

On Wednesday, opposition groups attacked 12 towns and villages in the Aleppo governorate, which is under the control of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces. Violent fighting ensued, causing the deaths of over 140 Syrian soldiers and fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other groups. Among the casualties were 71 members of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, 18 from the National Army, and 52 from the Syrian Army.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that this fighting is among the most intense in years, occurring roughly 10 kilometers from Aleppo city. The groups involved made territorial gains in western Aleppo and eastern Idlib, capturing strategically important villages near the Aleppo-Damascus international road.

The Syrian government’s Ministry of Defense stated that the opposition launched a major attack on November 27, targeting multiple points with medium and heavy weapons. Syrian forces responded vigorously, and the conflict continues.

**How might the outcome of the recent clashes in Syria influence Iran’s military strategy in the region?**

Title: Analyzing the Impact of brigadier General Qomars Porhashemi’s Death in Syria: An Interview with Military Analyst Dr. Amir hosseini

Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Hosseini. Following the recent escalation in Syria, especially the death of Brigadier General Qomars Porhashemi of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, can you shed some light on the importance of this event?

Dr. Hosseini: Thank you for having me.The death of Brigadier General Porhashemi is indeed a significant event, not just for Iran but for the entire region. He was a high-ranking official within the Revolutionary Guards, and his involvement in Syria highlights Iran’s deep military and strategic interests ther. His death symbolizes a serious blow to Iranian influence and operations within Syria at a time when they are trying to bolster their presence due to ongoing tensions and conflicts.

Interviewer: the clashes initiated by opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham have resulted in considerable casualties. How does this shift in the conflict dynamics affect the Syrian government’s position?

Dr. Hosseini: These recent clashes mark one of the most intense escalations we’ve seen in years, particularly around the Aleppo governorate, which has been relatively calm for some time. The Syrian government, under President Bashar al-assad,had been enjoying a period of stability thanks to the ceasefire established in 2020. however, the sudden resurgence of armed opposition poses a new threat. The territorial gains made by opponents near key access routes indicate a possibility of renewed resistance against the government forces, which could destabilize Assad’s regime further.

Interviewer: What can you tell us about the implications of external forces, particularly Russia’s air support in this context?

Dr.Hosseini: Russia plays a critical role in the Syrian conflict as a supporter of the Assad regime. The recent airstrikes by Russian warplanes targeting areas held by opposition forces signal their intent to maintain control over the situation and to safeguard the Syrian government’s position. However, increased military engagement could also escalate tensions with Turkey and other regional players who may support the opposition. The situation is quite fluid, and any miscalculation can lead to broader ramifications.

Interviewer: Considering the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria, with over half a million deaths as the start of the civil war and many displaced, what are the potential outcomes for civilians in light of these conflicts?

Dr. Hosseini: Unfortunately, civilians are often the most affected in such conflicts. With the resurgence of fighting, we can expect an alarming increase in casualties and displacement. Areas like Idlib, where Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has a stronghold, are particularly vulnerable, and any military actions will likely lead to greater humanitarian needs. It is imperative for the international community to address the escalating humanitarian crisis that has, for years, reached catastrophic proportions.

Interviewer: As we look to the future, what are your predictions regarding the Syrian conflict’s trajectory following these recent events?

Dr. Hosseini: The trajectory remains uncertain. If the opposition forces continue to gain strength and territory, we could see a protracted struggle that might force the Assad regime to reassess its strategies. Alternatively, if the Syrian government, backed by Russian airpower, can thwart these offensives effectively, it may lead to a resurgence of stability in the short term. However, the root causes of the conflict remain unaddressed, so without a political solution, violence is likely to continue in various forms.

Interviewer: Thank you for your insights, Dr. Hosseini. Your expertise helps us understand the complexities of the conflict in Syria.

dr. Hosseini: Thank you for having me. It’s vital we continue to discuss these issues and focus on the human aspect amid the ongoing violence.

The Observatory noted that airstrikes by Russian warplanes targeted areas around Sarmin in Idlib. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied groups control about half of Idlib and surrounding areas.

Before this battle, fronts in northern Syria’s Aleppo countryside had been calm for several months. A ceasefire has been in effect since March 6, 2020, established by both Russia and Turkey, following a significant offensive by regime forces. Despite ongoing bombardments and occasional raids, the ceasefire has largely held.

Since the start of the civil war in 2011, over half a million people have died in Syria. The conflict has caused widespread destruction and displaced millions.
