Within the next five years, artificial intelligence agents will execute purchases on behalf of consumers while traditional checkout methods fade into the background, according to projections from financial institutions and digital platforms. The shift centers on transforming the payment experience into an invisible layer of everyday transactions, raising new questions about digital security and intent.
Survey Reveals Shifting Consumer Checkout Habits Online
Payment processing speeds and frictionless options drive modern buying behavior across Lithuania, where 89 percent of surveyed residents purchased goods online over a six-month period, sc.bns.lt reported. The study, commissioned by Swedbank and conducted by market research firm Spinter tyrimai in March, surveyed 1,018 residents aged 18 to 75. Convenience and simplicity served as the decisive factor for 57 percent of those internet shoppers. Meanwhile, 23 percent of respondents reported abandoning their online shopping carts entirely when a store failed to offer their preferred payment method.
Retailers Balance Platform Costs With Digital Wallets
Digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay continue gaining traction as shopping shifts increasingly to mobile devices where consumers reject repeated data entry. Dainius Liulys, head of e-commerce platform Pigu.lt, noted that retailers must accommodate digital wallet demands while carefully managing payment processing costs across millions of orders. Ticket sales platforms face similar pressures due to the emotional and time-sensitive nature of buying event access.
Kakava.lt head Eglė Jackūnienė emphasized that ticketing transactions leave little margin for friction since tickets remain in carts for limited windows. E-commerce leaders agree that matching everyday mobile habits remains essential to preventing cart abandonment.
Artificial Intelligence Agents Take Over Evening Planning
The upcoming phase of retail evolution involves autonomous AI agents capable of purchasing items based on established user preferences. Eglė Jackūnienė outlined a future where finding a ticket expands into coordinating an entire evening out, including parking and pre-event dining arranged automatically by software.
Automated purchasing introduces the challenge of verifying consumer intent against potential software errors. Dainius Liulys pointed out that distinguishing genuine buyer mandates from mistaken agent transactions will form a major operational hurdle for digital platforms.
Banks Prepare Infrastructure for Invisible Payments
As transactions recede from active view, the burden of security shifts squarely to financial institutions and technology providers. Deimantas Trumpickas, head of the Cash Management Sales Support Department at Swedbank, stressed that card and app familiarity will persist even as the underlying mechanism operates automatically under strict user rules.
