Astronomers are using artificial intelligence to unlock the mysteries of supermassive black holes. An international team trained a neural network using millions of simulations, enabling it to interpret complex data from thes cosmic enigmas.
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a network of radio telescopes worldwide, captured data used to create visualizations of the supermassive black holes M87 and Sagittarius A*.Supercomputers processed these signals, but much data was discarded due to interpretation difficulties. Now, a neural network developed at the Morgridge Research Institute in wisconsin aims to utilize this untapped data to enhance EHT readings and facilitate new discoveries about Sagittarius A*.
The AI successfully analyzed previously discarded information,establishing new parameters for Sagittarius A*,located at the Milky Way’s center. this AI generated an option image of the black hole’s structure, revealing previously unknown characteristics.
Researchers believe the Milky Way’s central black hole spins at nearly its maximum speed. The new image also suggests the black hole’s rotation axis points toward Earth, offering insights into the material disks circulating around it.
Previously, astronomers estimated Sagittarius A*’s rotation as moderate to fast. Determining its precise rotational speed is crucial for understanding radiation behavior and stability around the black hole.
“That we are defying the prevailing theory is of course exciting,” said Michael Janssen, lead researcher at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. “However, I see our AI and machine learning approach primarily as a first step. Next, we will improve and extend the associated models and simulations.”
