Researchers at Inria Saclay in France and the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) in India have created an artificial intelligence (AI) system to help doctors combat drug-resistant infections. The AI suggests alternative uses for existing antibiotics.
The team, led by Dr.Emilie Chouzenoux (Inria Saclay) and Dr.Angshul Majumdar (IIIT-Delhi), including research engineer Stuti Jain and graduate students Kriti Kumar and Sayantika Chatterjee, developed a machine learning algorithm. This algorithm recommends alternative treatments for bacterial infections resistant to multiple drugs. antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat,especially in lower-income countries where over 70% of hospital infections resist at least one common antibiotic.
traditional antibiotic development is slow and costly. Drug repositioning, or finding new uses for existing drugs, has emerged as a faster, more affordable alternative. The AI algorithm learns from real-world clinical data, integrating antibiotic usage guidelines from Indian hospitals with molecular data like bacterial genomes and antibiotic chemical structures.This hybrid approach helps identify underutilized treatment options for drug repositioning.
The AI system was tested on multi-drug resistant strains, including Klebsiella pneumoniae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In each case, the algorithm identified effective antibiotics or those with repurposing potential, validated against resistance profiles and expert feedback.
“This is an excellent example of how AI and international collaboration can come together to solve real-world medical challenges,” Dr.Angshul Majumdar, IIIT-Delhi said.

The researchers hope this AI tool will become standard practice in infection management, especially where advanced diagnostics are limited, improving antibiotic stewardship and potentially saving lives.
