India is well-positioned to leverage artificial intelligence for both domestic growth and global contribution, with a focus on sector-specific application development creating meaningful job opportunities, according to IT Secretary S Krishnan.
lower Disruption Risk compared to Western Economies
India faces a comparatively lower risk of job displacement due to AI-driven automation in cognitive roles than Western economies, S Krishnan stated. This is attributed to the country’s smaller proportion of white-collar jobs relative to its overall workforce. Moreover, the prevalence of Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics (STEM) employment provides a strong foundation for AI integration.
The Need for Human-in-the-Loop Systems
Krishnan emphasized that, despite advancements in AI, a significant need for human oversight and intervention will persist for the foreseeable future. He explained that while the computational power and model building required for AI systems are capital-intensive, they necessitate only small, highly-skilled teams, limiting their overall employment impact.
Job Growth in Sector-Specific AI Applications
The most ample impact of AI, and the greatest opportunity for india, lies in the development and deployment of AI applications tailored to specific sectors and use cases. This process will require a substantial number of trained human workers.Krishnan believes India can offer the world a skilled workforce capable of delivering these applications, leading to significant AI-related job creation.
“The development of these applications and deployment of these applications will take a lot of trained human resources. And I think that is what India has to offer to the world. And that is where the job opportunities in AI will arise,” Krishnan said.
Indigenized AI Model and upcoming Summit
India is actively working on an indigenized AI application model, which is expected to be completed before the AI Summit scheduled for February of the following year. this initiative underscores India’s commitment to harnessing AI for its own economic and social benefit, while also contributing to the global AI ecosystem.
