The Changing Online Landscape
Alexis Ohanian, founding partner at venture capital firm Seven Seven Six and co-founder of Reddit, cautioned that artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally altering the nature of online platforms. Speaking at the BRIDGE Summit in Abu Dhabi on Monday, Ohanian, in conversation with TIME executive editor Nikhil Kumar, argued that platforms once celebrated for fostering human connection are becoming increasingly synthetic.
Ohanian, who described himself as someone who has “spent more time building or obsessing over the online zeitgeist,” emphasized that the rise of AI represents a important shift. he suggested that the platforms he helped build are losing their inherent “humanness” as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent.
Reddit as a Case Study
Reddit, a platform Ohanian co-founded in 2005, was initially lauded for its user-generated content and community-driven discussions. However, the increasing sophistication of AI tools now allows for the creation of synthetic posts and comments, making it challenging to distinguish between genuine human interaction and AI-generated content. This poses a threat to the platform’s core value proposition.
The problem isn’t limited to content creation. AI is also being deployed in content moderation, perhaps leading to biased or inaccurate decisions. According to a Wired report, Reddit relies heavily on automated tools to flag and remove inappropriate content, but thes tools are frequently enough imperfect and can disproportionately affect certain communities.
The Broader Implications of AI in Online Spaces
Ohanian’s concerns extend beyond Reddit. He believes that the proliferation of AI-generated content across all online platforms is eroding trust and authenticity. This has significant implications for everything from news consumption to political discourse.
A Pew Research Center study conducted in December 2023 found that 52% of Americans say AI makes it harder to determine what details is true, while 49% believe AI will make political discourse more negative. These findings underscore the growing public anxiety surrounding the impact of AI on the information ecosystem.
