New research from the Mayo Clinic suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) could be a game-changer in the early detection of heart failure, a condition affecting millions of Americans.
Heart failure, characterized by a weakened heart pump, is frequently enough arduous to diagnose in its early stages, especially when patients don’t yet experience symptoms. This can lead to delayed treatment and perhaps worse outcomes.A new study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health, led by cardiologist Dr. Peter Noseworthy and health services researcher Dr. Xiaoxi yao, explores the potential of AI-powered electrocardiograms (ECGs) for preventive screening.
“We believe that using AI-ECG technology during routine checkups could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment of heart failure,” says Dr. noseworthy. “This could slow or even stop the progression of the disease, potentially preventing more serious health complications and reducing healthcare costs.”
The researchers analyzed data from over 22,000 participants in the established EAGLE study, identifying those with weakened heart pumps. They then simulated the long-term progression of the disease, factoring in healthcare costs and patient outcomes.
The results were promising. The study found that using AI-ECG technology for preventive screening was highly cost-effective, with a cost of $27,858 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) – a measure that considers both the quality and length of life.
“We found that early diagnosis thru AI-ECG led to better and more cost-effective treatment options,” explains Dr. Yao. “The program was particularly cost-effective in outpatient settings, with a substantially lower cost of $1,651 per QALY.”
This research builds on growing momentum in the field of AI-driven cardiac care. Last year, the Utrecht UMC and Cordys Analytics developed AI-powered ECG software designed to assist healthcare providers in diagnosing heart conditions more accurately and efficiently.
