A⁣ REACH Air medical Services helicopter crashed on Highway 50 in⁤ Sacramento, California, ‍on Monday evening, critically injuring ⁣three crew members. The incident caused​ significant traffic disruptions and prompted concerns about potential​ fuel ignition.

Crash Details and Rescue ​Efforts

According to ⁣Sacramento Fire Department officials, the helicopter “augured ⁤into​ the dirt embankment” on ⁢the side of the highway, damaging its tail rotor ⁤and skidding across five lanes of traffic. The⁤ first‌ fire captain on‍ the scene, with the assistance of ​approximately 15 bystanders,‌ used leverage to lift ⁤a portion of⁤ the helicopter off a victim⁣ who was trapped underneath. another victim was rescued from a helicopter chair that had been ejected during the impact.

All three crew ​members – two women and one⁣ man -‍ were transported⁤ to a local hospital in critical condition, ​as reported by authorities.

REACH air Medical Services confirmed the incident in a statement released to The Los ​Angeles Times. “We are aware of an accident involving a REACH Air Medical helicopter on‌ Highway 50 in Sacramento this evening and⁢ are keeping all ​those impacted in our ‍thoughts and prayers,” the statement read. The company ​stated they were investigating the details of the crash and the condition​ of the crew. They ⁤pledged to provide ‍further details as it becomes ​available.

According to FlightRadar24, the helicopter, tail number REH5, had departed from⁤ California Davis medical Center in Sacramento ‌and was⁢ en route north before the crash.

Traffic Impact and Safety Concerns

The crash caused substantial traffic congestion on Highway 50. as of 8:00 PM PST, the westbound lanes had reopened, but the eastbound ‌lanes were expected to remain closed for the remainder of the night. ⁤ Authorities are focused on preventing ignition ​of the remaining fuel in the helicopter while the ‌Fire Department and California Highway Patrol investigate the cause of ⁤the crash.
