AirPods Pro 2 Feature Aims to Prevent Hearing Loss
Updated June 02, 2025
Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 have gained a new feature called Hearing Protection, designed to mitigate potential hearing damage. The update, delivered via software, underscores Apple’s focus on health-related features.
The Hearing Protection feature operates across all three noise modes: Transparency, Adaptive, and Noise cancellation. It automatically reduces the intensity of loud sounds in environments such as concerts, fitness classes, and sporting events.
Apple says that in Transparency mode, the feature provides 11-15 decibels of attenuation. Adaptive mode provides 25-29 dB, and Noise Cancellation mode provides 25-30 dB of attenuation.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that billions of people are at risk of hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices. By 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss, with over 700 million requiring rehabilitation, the WHO said.
The WHO also estimates that over 1 billion young adults are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices.
What’s next
As Hearing Protection expands to additional AirPods models, it could reduce the projected number of people affected by hearing loss in the coming decades.
