Sweden Democrats Leader Apologizes for Antisemitism
Jimmie Åkesson, leader of the Sweden Democrats, has issued an apology too Sweden’s Jewish community for the party’s past antisemitism. The apology follows the release of the second part of the party’s “white book,” which chronicles its history from 1989 to 2010.
The report, penned by historian Tony Gustafsson of Uppsala University, confirms the sweden Democrats’ roots in Bevara Sverige Svenskt (Keep Sweden Swedish), a racist and nationalist association. It also verified the dissemination of antisemitic materials by party members in the 1990s, including praise for the Ku Klux Klan and Holocaust denial.
During a speech at the Almedalen political festival, Åkesson said he deeply regretted that Jews in Sweden had rational reasons to fear the Sweden Democrats. “Antisemitism does not belong in Sweden, does not belong in Swedish politics, and should always be fought,” Åkesson said.
Aron Verständig, chair of the Jewish Council, welcomed Åkesson’s apology. However, critics noted Åkesson used the apology to deflect blame and accuse the Swedish left.
despite Åkesson’s claims of reform, examples of racism within the Sweden Democrats persist. Last year, a party MP was recorded singing a racist chant. Also last year, a politician was removed from her lay judge position after claiming Jewish people were conspiring to replace Swedes with immigrants.
Critics point to Åkesson’s own use of white nationalist language and the party of the Sweden Democrats’ electoral gains by extreme right-wing groups as evidence that the party has not fully addressed its issues with racism and Nazi sympathizers.
The Islamic Association has requested an apology for years of islamophobic abuse from the Sweden Democrats. Others are seeking apologies for the depiction of immigrants as violent and risky and for anti-LGBTQ+ comments made by party leaders.
