al Pacino recently revealed that he was offered a “fortune” to play Han Solo in the first Star Wars film. However, the award-winning actor admitted he declined the part because he simply didn’t “understand” the script.
The role of the roguish space pilot eventually whent to Harrison Ford, catapulting him to international fame. Ford’s portrayal of Han Solo became iconic, leading to appearances in multiple sequels and a prequel film.
Pacino, 85, discussed his decision with Entertainment Weekly, reflecting on his connection to the “Movie Brats,” a group of influential New Hollywood filmmakers including Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas.
“They were real idealists coming into the Seventies with great films all over the globe,” Pacino said. He added that he was performing on Broadway when he received lucas’s Star Wars screenplay. “I thought, I don’t understand,” Pacino recalled.”[I thought] I must be out of space myself.”
Confused by the script, Pacino sought advice from a trusted friend before rejecting the offer.
“I looked at this thing and I sent it to charlie Loughton,my friend and mentor,actually. I said, ‘What do you make of this?’ He was pretty wise and he said, ‘I don’t get it, Al. I dunno. I don’t get it.’ I said,‘Well,I don’t either; what are we going to do?’”
Pacino added,”They offered me a fortune,but I don’t know. No, I can’t play something if I don’t speak the language.”
Despite missing out on the Star wars phenomenon, Pacino seems to have no regrets. He even joked about his role in Ford’s success,quipping,”I said,’I think I’m in the mood to make Harrison Ford a career.'”
