Alcalá la Real is positioning itself as an astrotourism destination for the summer of 2026, anchored by the upcoming total solar eclipse on August 12, according to local officials. Mayor Marino Aguilera and Tourism Councilor Juan Manuel Marchal unveiled the Cielo de Frontera 2026 programming, an initiative designed to leverage the region’s privileged dark skies, high altitude, and rural natural viewpoints.

A 9,000-Euro Public-Private Investment in Dark Skies

The municipal program operates with a 9,000-euro budget partially funded through the Action Plan of the Alcalá la Real Quality Destination Association, known as SICTED. Mayor Aguilera emphasized that the public-private partnership integrates local businesses, food producers, and tourist accommodations to merge science, nature, and gastronomy. The Los Llanos astronomical park joins the lineup as a primary observation venue. The initiative seeks to reinforce the municipality’s standing within the Starlight Reserve while drawing travelers interested in astronomy.

Astronomical Tastings and Rural Olive Oil Mills

The experience-based track of Cielo de Frontera 2026 pairs industrial tourism with stargazing across four local olive oil mills situated in rural villages. Activities include facility tours, oil tastings, regional food samples, and guided night observations led by the Einstein Astronomy Society of Alcalá la Real. According to the municipal schedule, the tasting events include:

July 4 at Aceites Florencio Aguilera in La Hortichuela. July 11 at San Antonio Cooperative in Ermita Nueva. September 5 at Nuestra Señora del Rosario Cooperative in Charilla. September 12 at Esencia Andalucía Gourmet in Mures.

Each session accommodates up to 25 participants with a registration fee of 20 euros.

Family Workshops and Planetarium Sessions at Martínez Montañés Theater

Cultural and educational events take place at the Teatro Martínez Montañés, featuring family workshops and sessions inside a planetarium managed by AstroNatura. July workshops focus on eclipse preparation and safe solar observation instruments, while September sessions center on building sundials. These family classes cost 5 euros per household, cap attendance at ten families per session, and are instructed by members of the Einstein Astronomy Society. Planetarium viewings are scheduled for July 5, July 12, September 6, and September 13, with morning and afternoon passes available to introduce diverse audiences to astronomy ahead of the August celestial event.
