HUR reported that the Zircon uses a solid-first booster to accelerate the weapon to the speed and altitude required to ignite its main solid-fuel engine. During flight, initial stabilization and guidance steer the projectile toward its designated coordinates. The missile then relies on an inertial navigation system for its cruise phase before shifting to an active radar seeker during the final stage of its attack run. The missile utilizes Russia’s Baget-83 digital onboard computing system, according to HUR disclosures. Its rear section features electro-hydraulic control systems alongside folding aerodynamic fins, with the entire tail assembly manufactured from titanium. Despite Moscow’s assertions that the weapon can achieve speeds of Mach 9, Ukrainian military intelligence recorded a maximum speed of approximately Mach 6.8, noting that the missile cannot sustain that velocity throughout its entire flight path.

However, because the Russian Black Sea Fleet has encountered significant operational hurdles and safety challenges during the ongoing conflict, Moscow has been compelled to adapt the missile for ground-based launches utilizing Bastion-m coastal missile systems. The 120-kilogram warhead identified by HUR is lighter than the roughly 150-kilogram payload carried by Russia’s smaller Banderol cruise missile. This revelation comes as Moscow simultaneously expands its deployment of ballistic weapons, including the upgraded Iskander-1000 ballistic missile. That upgraded system reportedly features a larger engine and launch setup designed to engage targets at extended distances, placing growing pressure on Ukraine’s remaining air-defense stockpiles.
