The 21-year-old American, also a 2023 US Open champion, is the seventh woman of colour to win a major tennis championship. She spoke of her deep connection to the African-American community and her commitment to inspiring others.
Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka in a compelling match,6-7,6-2,6-4,to clinch her second major trophy. Sabalenka, though, suggested the loss was due to unusual circumstances, citing the wind and a high number of unforced errors.
Sabalenka said that sometimes it felt like Gauff was hitting the ball from the frame and that the wind would let the ball fly like crazy. She also implied that she had inadvertently helped Gauff by defeating Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals. gauff responded, disagreeing with Sabalenka’s assessment, noting her previous straight-sets victory over Swiatek.
