aldama to Testify in Spanish Soccer Federation Probe
Businessman Victor de Aldama is scheduled to testify Wednesday as a witness before a judge in Majadahonda. The hearing is part of an investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) agreement to move the Spanish Super Cup competition to Saudi Arabia. The probe also examines the rise of Andorra in the soccer ranks.
Magistrate delia rodrigo called for Aldama’s testimony after agreeing in March to incorporate statements he made last November before the national court into the case. Those earlier statements were part of a separate, ongoing procedure.
Aldama previously stated that Koldo García,a former aide to ex-Transportation Minister José Luis Ábalos, allegedly intervened with the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to secure a Second B division spot for Zamora CF. That spot was ultimately awarded to FC Andorra, owned by Gerard piqué, the former soccer player and businessman. ”Thing that fits me a lot,” De Aldama said.
The Clarity and Democracy Association raised concerns that Aldama’s statements, coupled with a report from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office detailing movements from a Kosmos Football SL account linked to Piqué, suggested potential impropriety in the granting of the spot to FC Andorra. The association deemed it necessary for both Aldama and Piqué to appear before the Majadahonda court.
Initially, the judge rejected the association’s request to summon Aldama. However, the judge later granted the prosecutor’s request to include Aldama’s prior judicial declaration from the National Court.
While Aldama has not been formally named in the Majadahonda proceedings, Piqué has been under scrutiny since May of last year. The judge cited potential criminal indications in the commission awarded to Kosmos related to the transfer of the spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.
What’s next
The testimony of Aldama coudl shed further light on the dealings between the RFEF, Kosmos, and other involved parties, possibly leading to further legal action or reforms within the federation.
