Honda MotoGP test rider Aleix Espargaro was hospitalized following a serious crash on April 7, 2026, during a private HRC testing session in Sepang. The Spanish rider confirmed the incident and the extent of his injuries through a social media post, revealing that he sustained several contusions and four fractured vertebrae.

According to reports from Motorsport.com, and Crash.net, Espargaro noted that the fractures were narrow and, fortunately, did not affect his spinal cord. He spent several days receiving treatment at the CU Aurelius Hospital in Malaysia before being cleared for travel.

Medical Recovery and Next Steps

Espargaro has since departed Malaysia to return to Spain, accompanied by his wife, Laura. Upon his arrival, he will undergo further medical evaluations to determine if surgical intervention is required.

The rider indicated that these assessments will take place at the Quiron Dexeus Hospital in Barcelona. In his social media update, Espargaro expressed gratitude to the Honda team for their support during his hospitalization.

On Tuesday, during the test here in Sepang, I suffered a very serious crash. I had several contusions and four fractured vertebrae, although very narrowly, and fortunately, they did not affect my spinal cord. After spending a few days at the CU Aurelius Hospital, where I received excellent care, I can now fly home with Laura, who came to rescue me from the other side of the world.

Role in Honda Development

Espargaro joined Honda at the end of the 2024 season after retiring from professional grand prix racing. Since then, he has served as a primary figure in the development of HRC’s machinery, contributing through intensive testing and wildcard appearances.

During 2025, Espargaro balanced his duties at Honda with a professional cycling campaign. However, for the 2026 season, he stepped away from competitive cycling to dedicate his full focus to his role as a test rider for the manufacturer.

The crash occurs during a critical phase of Honda’s technical progression. Espargaro has spent the early months of 2026 focusing on the RC213V prototype. This development cycle aims to refine several specific areas of the bike, including:

  • The chassis
  • The swingarm
  • Aerodynamics
  • Traction, which is described as a key missing component for the Tokyo-based bike

These refinements are scheduled to continue until the upcoming Brno tests.

Future Prototype Testing

The testing program in Sepang involved not only Espargaro but also Takaaki Nakagami. Reports indicate that the pair were utilizing the session to evaluate Honda’s 2027 850cc bike.

The injury is considered a significant setback for Honda’s development timeline, as Espargaro’s expertise is central to the progression of both the current and future prototypes. Despite the severity of the crash, Espargaro concluded his announcement by stating I’ll be back!
