Role in Honda Development
Espargaro joined Honda at the end of the 2024 season after retiring from professional grand prix racing. Since then, he has served as a primary figure in the development of HRC’s machinery, contributing through intensive testing and wildcard appearances.
During 2025, Espargaro balanced his duties at Honda with a professional cycling campaign. However, for the 2026 season, he stepped away from competitive cycling to dedicate his full focus to his role as a test rider for the manufacturer.
The crash occurs during a critical phase of Honda’s technical progression. Espargaro has spent the early months of 2026 focusing on the RC213V prototype. This development cycle aims to refine several specific areas of the bike, including:
- The chassis
- The swingarm
- Aerodynamics
- Traction, which is described as a key missing component for the Tokyo-based bike
These refinements are scheduled to continue until the upcoming Brno tests.
Future Prototype Testing
The testing program in Sepang involved not only Espargaro but also Takaaki Nakagami. Reports indicate that the pair were utilizing the session to evaluate Honda’s 2027 850cc bike.
The injury is considered a significant setback for Honda’s development timeline, as Espargaro’s expertise is central to the progression of both the current and future prototypes. Despite the severity of the crash, Espargaro concluded his announcement by stating I’ll be back!
