The Onion’s proposed takeover of Alex Jones’ Infowars platform has drawn attention from Jones himself, who claims to have uncovered controversial past work by comedian Tim Heidecker, slated to be involved in the satirical revival of the conspiracy theory outlet.
Jones stated on social media that The Onion’s new creative director had produced content involving “pro pedo/child kidnapping, torture and murder programs,” accompanied by a fabricated mugshot of Heidecker sourced from a 2017 Adult Swim courtroom series where he appeared in a fictional trial scenario.
The satirical news outlet The Onion has submitted a proposal to a Texas state judge seeking an exclusive, temporary license to the intellectual property of Infowars’ parent company, Free Speech Systems, which would allow the publication to host its own content on the Infowars website and social media accounts.
If approved by Judge Maya Guerra Gamble in Austin, the agreement would enable The Onion to transform Infowars into a parody platform, with plans to develop comedic characters and narratives centered around figures who promote unfounded conspiracy theories or harmful health advice.
Ben Collins, chief executive of The Onion, confirmed in a press interview that the deal could take effect around April 30, 2026, pending judicial approval, and emphasized that the initiative includes hiring personnel to operate the rebranded site, with Heidecker among those brought on for creative direction.
Collins further noted that a core objective of the project is to highlight how audiences often consume information from individuals presenting baseless claims as fact, particularly in contexts involving dangerous misinformation presented as health guidance.
The proposed arrangement would span six months, with an option to extend for another six months, while a court-appointed representative continues efforts to liquidate the assets of Free Speech Systems amid ongoing litigation related to over $1 billion in defamation judgments awarded to families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.
The Onion would be responsible for monthly payments of $81,000 to cover operational expenses such as rent and utilities for the Infowars studio space, according to reporting from the Associated Press.
Families of the Sandy Hook victims, who have pursued legal action against Jones for years, have expressed support for efforts to remove him from control of the Infowars brand while continuing to pursue financial compensation through the courts.
