Alibaba Cloud Service Faces Outage, Impacting Mainland China, Hong Kong, and US Customers

Reuters news agency reported that Alibaba’s cloud service experienced an outage lasting nearly two hours on November 27, affecting customers in mainland China, Hong Kong, and the United States. This marks the second outage in a month for the tech giant.

The outage primarily affected several Alibaba Cloud database management products, including PostgreSQL, Redis, and MySQL editions. Eight regions, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and the US state of Virginia, were impacted by the service disruption.

In a statement published on its website on Tuesday (Nov. 28), Alibaba Cloud stated, “On November 27, starting at 9:16 Beijing time, Alibaba Cloud investigated an inconsistency in the console and OpenAPI access for database products. The issue was resolved at 10:58 on the same day.”

This recent incident follows a service outage on November 12, which lasted over three hours and had a broader impact on various products, affecting a greater number of regions worldwide compared to previous issues.

According to IDC, Alibaba holds the largest market share for cloud services in China, at 29.9% in the first half of 2023, followed by Huawei at 13.2% and China Telecom at 12.2%.

This latest issue comes after a service outage on 12 November that lasted more than three hours and affected a wide range of products. and affect many areas around the world more than previous problems
