Alibaba Group Holding has launched its first external partnership for its flagship consumer artificial intelligence app, Qwen, by integrating flight booking services for China Eastern Airlines directly into the platform.

The collaboration, announced on April 23, 2026, enables users of the Qwen app to manage the entire flight booking process—from searching for flights and purchasing tickets to selecting seats and checking in—through a single natural-language chat interface.

According to the South China Morning Post, this marks the first time Alibaba has opened its agentic AI technology to a major commercial partner outside its own ecosystem, extending the app’s capabilities into real-world travel services.

As part of the agreement, the Qwen app will feature a “Qwen Exclusive Price” label on eligible China Eastern Airlines flights, offering users special discounts amounting to several tens of yuan at the time of booking.

The partnership builds on an earlier strategic collaboration announced in February 2026, in which China Eastern Airlines and Alibaba’s Qwen and Fliggy platforms agreed to leverage artificial intelligence to improve ticketing and lifestyle services. That initiative aimed to provide users with exclusive subsidies when purchasing China Eastern tickets through the Qwen and Fliggy apps.

Alibaba stated that the collaboration is expected to expand beyond ticketing, with plans to develop “flight ticket+” products and integrate AI-driven solutions into broader lifestyle service scenarios. Both companies intend to introduce more interactive initiatives to enhance customer experience and streamline travel-related offerings using advanced AI technologies.

The move aligns with Alibaba’s broader strategic push into artificial intelligence across its business segments, including recent developments such as the launch of the RynnBrain robotics model and preparations to acquire Nvidia H200 AI chips to support AI-driven applications.

More than 10 Chinese and international carriers have reportedly joined Qwen’s new AI-powered ticketing service, indicating growing industry interest in Alibaba’s agentic AI capabilities for travel and commerce.
