Concerns have been raised following several cases ⁢of meningococcal infection, especially among children. According to a hospital director, The tragedy is realy great⁣ because ⁣it is about children. Patients are between 15 and 31 years old.I say children because my children are this age. One‌ of the most serious patients has⁢ already ‍been discharged. Heavy ⁣patients who have ‌been brought to us are still on treatment but all are extubated.

The director emphasized the ⁤long recovery period for the eight patients affected and expressed gratitude to⁣ those who donated blood.

It ​is indeed our desire to be able to help thes people as quickly as possible and to⁣ be written and returned to their families. But how long will ⁤the treatment last, I cannot say. It will last as much as⁢ it should, the director stated.

The cost of treatment is⁢ considerable,involving specialized bioproducts,antibiotics,and equipment. The treatment itself is ⁤very expensive because it is associated wiht many bioproducts, many antibiotics, very specific equipment. He did everything right, and the rest ‍is his concern, the director added.

Understanding Meningococcal ​Infection

Meningococcal infection, caused by the bacterium *Neisseria meningitidis*, is not a new disease, but it remains a concern due to its potential severity. While relatively ‌rare, cases tend to increase seasonally.​ The director explained that meteorological conditions and a child’s immune response can make them more susceptible.

According to The‌ Lancet,​ in 2019, an estimated 2.51 million cases of meningitis occurred ‍globally, with an estimated 236,000 deaths. Approximately 13% of cases were attributed to *Neisseria meningitidis*.

The infection​ can progress rapidly, from an asymptomatic carrier to a ⁣life-threatening⁤ illness within hours.

Symptoms and Precautions

Factors contributing to the disease include an immature immune system, predisposition, and recent illnesses. The director advised parents ⁢to watch for:

• Unexplained vomiting
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Neck rigidity (inability to flex⁢ the neck)

The most crucial thing for parents is to pay attention to any unreasonable vomiting, which has started ⁤spontaneously, dizziness, headache with the so-called, as we express in medicine, neck rigidity or the baby cannot fold their neck. This‌ is a signal that these are the first symptoms of the disease, he said.

Local Cases​ and Hospital‌ preparedness

The director noted that ​the‌ largest emergency‍ hospital ‌in Bulgaria has treated three cases of meningococcal infection since the beginning of the year. The patients, ranging from 3 months to 16 years old, were diagnosed and transferred to infectious disease wards. One child ‌remains in intensive care.
