Not only young people leave Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also entire families in search of a better life. The demographic picture is getting worse. How to stop the tendency to leave? Is Bosnia and Herzegovina threatened by the white plague? Do we need better prenatal policies? President of the Union for Sustainable Earnings Mirhunisa Zukić, demography professor Stevo Pašalić, sociology professor Jusuf Žiga and Adnan Jabučar, who moved to Germany with his family, spoke about these topics to Polis.
“My wife was offered a job in Cologne. We have three children who are growing up when, like their peers, they need stability, at home and in the country. Unfortunately, this is not the case in our country. That was our decision, not financial, not anyone else’s, but we wanted to give our children something more than what they can get there (in Bosnia and Herzegovina). Did we make a mistake? – I don’t think we are. During these two years, it seems to me that they are taking bigger steps than they would have done in their homeland,” said Jabučar.
“There were always more people leaving than immigrating to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It left results, demographically, economically and otherwise. Today, migration policy is a key issue that needs to be seriously addressed,” Pašalić pointed out.
“We fought a lot so that people, according to Annex 7 of the Dayton Peace Agreement, returned – spontaneously. The state did not stand behind that return, but the people returned, the critical mass, who went to their own homes and destroyed. Then we lobbied with international organizations, until our country formed a ministry. “We put a lot of effort and effort so that people could return, at least in those destroyed parts where they could return, at least where they were undisturbed,” Zukić noted.
“Young and capable people are society’s greatest asset. The most important social development resource. All countries and societies, which hold even a little for themselves, know that this is so and behave responsibly towards this resource, they strive to keep these people”, says Žiga .
