Alpine F1 Team Announces Major Departures and Interim Leadership

Williams F1 Appoints Pat Fry as CTO

In a recent move, Williams F1 has announced the appointment of Pat Fry as their new Chief Technical Officer (CTO). This decision comes after the Alpine F1 Team announced Fry’s departure following the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix.

A Farewell to Alpine

After the first free practice session of the F1 Belgian Grand Prix, Alpine F1 Team bid farewell to their Team Principal, Otmar Szafnauer, along with Sporting Director Alain Permann and CTO Pat Fry. Szafnauer, who had been with the team for 18 months, will continue his work until the end of the weekend’s race. The team expressed their gratitude to Szafnauer for his contributions to their impressive fourth-place finish in the 2022 Constructors’ Championship.

Furthermore, Enstone sporting director Alan Pellman, who had been a part of the team for an impressive 34 years, also parted ways with Alpine. Pellman will attend the Belgian Grand Prix before leaving the team. Chief Technical Officer Pat Fry will also be moving on to pursue other opportunities within the F1 industry.

Interim Appointments

Following these departures, Alpine Motorsport Vice President Bruno Famin will temporarily take on the role of interim Team Principal for the BWT Alpine F1 Team. In addition, Julian Routh, the Alpine Academy director, has been appointed interim Sporting Director, while Matt Harman will lead the technical team at the Enstone facility. Both Routh and Harman will report directly to Bruno Famin.

Spa Rains Red Flag

In other F1 news, the rain at Spa resulted in a red flag during the race. The top three drivers at that point were Sainz, Piastri, and Norris. Yuki Tsunoda claimed seventh place, while Max Verstappen faced some challenges and did not record a time. The race is certainly heating up as unexpected twists and turns keep F1 enthusiasts on the edge of their seats.
