Rising Dementia Rates in Canada

The number of Canadians⁢ living with dementia is projected too reach nearly one million within the next five years. Though, a leading expert believes the coming decade holds meaningful promise for advancements in treatment, prevention, and early diagnosis.

A ‘Turnaround Decade’ for Alzheimer’s?

Dr. Howard Chertkow, a senior scientist at the Baycrest Academy for Research and education, stated in a September 22, 2025 interview with CTV News, “this is going to be the turnaround decade.”

Preventative Lifestyle Interventions

Dr. Chertkow highlighted the emergence of several “lifestyle interventions” over the past five to ten years that can demonstrably reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia. Population studies suggest that approximately half of dementia cases could be prevented through these interventions.

Risk factors identified include poor diet, obesity, lack of physical exercise, and untreated vascular issues such as high blood⁢ pressure, diabetes, and smoking. CTV News reports that these‍ factors significantly increase the likelihood of developing dementia.
