Amazon’s $13B Investment Enhances⁢ Australia’s AI Role

Amazon⁣ is set to inject A$20 billion ($13 ​billion) ⁣into Australia over the next five years, through 2029, ⁤to construct ‌state-of-the-art data centers. This substantial investment responds to the escalating demand for cloud computing and the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence applications.

The tech giant’s commitment represents the largest investment from a global technology provider‍ in Australia. Amazon anticipates that​ this initiative will accelerate the adoption of AI across‍ various sectors, enhance overall productivity, and modernize the⁢ IT infrastructure for⁣ Australian businesses and organizations.

Australian Prime⁢ Minister anthony Albanese stated that the investment will create economic opportunities for Australians, including skilled jobs and infrastructure to support AI and supercomputing. The Department of Industry, Science and Resources estimates AI ‍and automation could contribute up to A$600 ⁣billion annually to the nation’s‌ GDP by 2030.

Matt‍ Garman, CEO of ​Amazon Web Services, said⁤ that Amazon is empowering‍ Australians to innovate at scale ⁢through this investment in a once-in-a-generation change: AI.

To meet the power demands ⁤of its expanding cloud infrastructure, Amazon is also investing in three new solar farms located in Victoria and Queensland. ‍These farms will supply⁣ over 170 megawatts of electricity to the data centers.⁢ Upon completion, Amazon will operate 11 solar farms⁣ across Australia, boasting a combined capacity of 1.4 million megawatt hours, enough to power approximately 290,000 ⁢Australian homes ‍annually.

Amazon initially invested in Australia in 2012, launching the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region‌ hub. Since then, the company has​ established⁢ additional facilities ⁤in⁤ Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. Moreover, Amazon ⁢has provided⁤ digital skills training to more then 400,000 individuals in Australia, preparing them for generative AI programs.
