Amazon has announced a $5 billion investment in Anthropic, with the potential to add up to an additional $20 billion in the future, marking a significant expansion of their strategic collaboration in artificial intelligence.

The investment, announced on April 20, 2026, brings Amazon’s total commitment to Anthropic to $13 billion when combined with prior investments, and positions the company to potentially invest as much as $25 billion in total if future milestones are met.

As part of the expanded partnership, Anthropic has committed to spend more than $100 billion over the next ten years on Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies, including Trainium and Graviton hardware, to train and power its advanced AI models.

Anthropic will secure up to 5 gigawatts of capacity from current and future generations of Amazon’s Trainium chips, including significant Trainium3 capacity expected to come online in 2026, to support the training and deployment of its Claude series of large language models.

AWS customers will now be able to access the full Anthropic-native Claude console directly from within AWS using their existing contracts, without requiring additional credentials, contracts, or billing relationships, streamlining access to Anthropic’s AI tools.

The collaboration builds on years of joint work since 2023, during which over 100,000 customers have run Anthropic Claude models on AWS, making Claude one of the most popular model families on Amazon Bedrock.

Amazon and Anthropic are also advancing Project Rainier, described as one of the largest AI compute clusters in the world, to push the boundaries of large-scale AI research and infrastructure development.

The expanded agreement includes provisions for Anthropic to use future generations of Trainium chips as they become available, along with tens of millions of Graviton CPU cores, to ensure long-term price-performance advantages for its AI workloads.

Both companies emphasized that the deepened ties reflect shared progress in custom silicon development and a mutual goal to accelerate generative AI adoption across industries by making it easier for customers to build, deploy, and scale AI applications.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that the collaboration demonstrates progress in chip development and delivers the technology and infrastructure customers need for generative AI, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the partnership allows his company to focus on AI research while meeting growing demand for Claude.
