Amazon’s Renewable Revolution: Groundbreaking Hybrid Project Springs to Life
Amazon Invests in Renewable Energy to Power California Facilities
Amazon Enters into Power Purchase Agreement with AES
Amazon has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with AES to source power from two solar farms located in Adelanto, San Bernardino County, California. The agreement marks a significant step towards Amazon’s goal of powering its facilities in California with renewable energy.
Project Details
The Baldy Mesa project, launched on October 24th, consists of 150MW of solar power generation capacity and 75MW/300MWh of battery energy storage system (BESS). The smaller Silver Peak project comprises 50MW of solar power and 25MW/100MWh of BESS.
Powering Amazon’s Data Centers
The project is part of a broader power generation portfolio that Amazon has procured to power its data center portfolio in California and Arizona, totaling 1.5GW of power generation. This is the third large-scale renewable energy supply agreement between Amazon and AES, following two PPAs signed in May 2022 to provide electricity to Amazon’s California operations.
Renewable Energy Supply Agreement
As part of the agreement, AES will supply renewable energy in the CAISO (California Independent System Operator) market, procuring power from a total of 450 MW of solar power and 225 MW of 4-hour BESS from its project portfolio. This investment in renewable energy will help reduce Amazon’s carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
