August 25, 2023 (local time) – AMD has recently announced the introduction of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (AMD FSR 3) along with a lineup of upcoming games that will support this cutting-edge technology.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) first made its debut in 2021 and was further updated to AMD FSR 2 last year. Since its initial release, the number of games that support FSR has rapidly expanded to over 300 available and upcoming titles.

So, what’s new in AMD FSR 3? This advanced upscaling technology combines super resolution time upscaling and frame generation, resulting in significantly enhanced frame rates for supported games. FSR 3 was initially showcased to developers earlier this year at GDC 23.

During its announcement at CDC, AMD introduced the latest updates to its AMD FidelityFX, including FSR 3 and AMD FidelityFX SDK, targeted towards developers. The key improvement with FSR 3 is the introduction of frame generation, which employs an enhanced version of AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames Optical Flow (AFMF) technology and utilizes transient game data like Motion Vectors to provide higher frame rates (up to 2×2) and generate additional high-quality frames.

The addition of frame generation proves particularly advantageous in demanding situations, such as gaming in 4K at maximum ray tracing settings or when your frame rate is heavily constrained by the CPU.

To ensure that frame generation does not impact the in-game user interface, AMD incorporated a built-in UI handling solution as an integral part of FSR 3.

Moreover, FSR 3 also includes the latest version of Temporal Upscaling technology, optimizing its integration with the new frame generation technology.

The frame generation feature in AMD FSR 3, combined with higher resolution upscaling, unlocks previously unattainable frame rates for the most graphically intensive titles in supported games, even at 4K with maximum ray tracing settings. FSR 3 offers multiple upscaling quality modes, including ‘Quality’ and ‘Performance,’ allowing users to customize the balance between image quality and performance.

Additionally, AMD FSR 3 introduces a new “Native AA” mode, which stands for “Native Anti-Aliasing.” Unlike other modes, this mode uses AMD FSR 3 without upscaling but applies high-quality FSR aliasing and sharpening, resulting in superior image quality compared to native resolution.

With AMD FSR 3, latency is also significantly reduced, ensuring a more responsive gaming experience when utilizing frame generation technology. Before enabling FSR 3 frame generation, it is recommended to run games at 60FPS or higher to minimize the latency introduced by this feature.

For gamers using AMD Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards, there is the option to leverage AMD Radeon Anti-Lag+ technology, a new driver-based latency reduction solution. This technology further reduces latency in compatible games, including FSR 3-supported games like Forspoken. For gamers using AMD Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards and below, the Anti-Lag feature is available as an alternative, working across all games.

AMD FSR 3’s built-in latency reduction technology provides valuable latency reduction for almost any hardware when utilizing frame generation, while AMD’s in-driver latency reduction solution offers the optimal experience for AMD Radeon gamers.

The first games to support AMD FSR 3 will be Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum, scheduled for an early autumn release. Currently, 15 game developers and publishers have already confirmed their support for AMD FSR 3, with more games expected to adopt this technology in the future.

Furthermore, AMD is collaborating closely with Epic Games to bring AMD FSR 3 support to Unreal Engine. An FSR 3 plugin for Unreal Engine 5 is currently in development, aiming to simplify integration for developers.

As part of the suite of features and technologies, AMD FSR 3 will be an open-source technology freely available to developers on GPUOpen.com in the near future. It will join the AMD FidelityFX SDK, which includes various other AMD FidelityFX technologies.

AMD FSR 3 is designed as a scalable solution with frame generation capabilities, making it compatible with multiple hardware platforms. Whether it’s PCs or consoles, AMD FSR 3 can seamlessly work across various systems, regardless of the graphics hardware vendor.

The versatility of AMD FidelityFX technology empowers developers to easily transfer their creations across different platforms, enabling more players to enjoy their latest games.

Integrating AMD FSR 3 into game development is also straightforward, freeing up developers’ time to focus on other important aspects of gaming and ensuring the best possible gaming experience before meeting market deadlines.

For optimal performance when using AMD FSR 3 alongside upscaling and frame generation, the recommended hardware includes the latest supported products.

In conclusion, AMD’s introduction of FSR 3 technology and its collaboration with game developers highlight the company’s commitment to enhancing gaming experiences with cutting-edge technologies. With the upcoming support of various games and the availability of FSR 3 in the open-source domain, gamers can expect increased frame rates, improved image quality, and reduced latency for an even more immersive gameplay experience.
