US Tariffs: A Looming Threat for Garment Workers in Asia
Teh imposition of US tariffs, notably those targeting specific goods adn industries, is sending ripples of anxiety through the lives of garment workers across Asia. For many, their livelihoods are intrinsically linked to the success of factories that rely heavily on export markets, and the prospect of reduced orders or factory closures due to these tariffs is a constant source of worry.
The Shadow of tariffs
In Cambodia, the garment industry is a cornerstone of the economy, providing employment for hundreds of thousands. An Sopheak, a garment worker in Phnom Penh, voices the collective fear: “We pray every day that President Trump will lift the tariff. Please think about us and our poor country.” Her sentiment is echoed by many who feel powerless against decisions made far from their reality.
“Our livelihoods depend on the garment factory. We won’t survive if our boss shuts it down,” An Sopheak explains from her small rented room. With limited educational opportunities, finding choice employment is a daunting prospect. the uncertainty breeds a daily anxiety, a constant prayer for relief from the economic pressures imposed by international trade policies.
A Precarious Existence
The impact of tariffs isn’t confined to Cambodia. In Sri Lanka, Surangi sandya, a factory supervisor in Nawalapitiya, describes a similar sense of unease.”Companies don’t work at a loss… If orders decrease, if there is a loss, there may be a possibility that the company will shut down,” she states, highlighting the delicate balance that keeps factories operational. Sandya, who has risen through the ranks from seamstress to supervisor, understands the potential consequences of a downturn.
For some, the only perceived option is to seek work elsewhere, even if it means resorting to illegal means. The possibility of moving to Thailand for employment, despite the risks,is a consideration for Cambodian workers facing the potential collapse of their current jobs. This desperation underscores the profound impact of trade policies on the most vulnerable segments of the workforce.
The human cost of these economic decisions is significant. Garment workers, often the sole breadwinners for their families, face the stark reality of job loss and the struggle to provide for their loved ones. Their pleas for consideration highlight the need for a more nuanced understanding of how global trade policies directly affect the lives of ordinary people.
