American Immigrant from Laos Wins $1.8 Trillion Powerball First Prize

According to the Associated Press on the 29th (local time), Cheng Saefan (46), who lives in Portland, attended a press conference for the Powerball first prize winner held by the Oregon Lottery Association. Oregon law requires the disclosure of lottery winners except in exceptional cases. Cheng Sae-pan appeared at the press conference with his head shaved because he was suffering from cancer. He introduced, “I was born in Laos in 1977 and immigrated to the United States in 1994.” He then said that he had been diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and was unable to work, and was currently undergoing chemotherapy.

He said, “I bought 20 lottery tickets with my wife and a friend. It felt good. My wife and I will share the winnings equally with my friend.” Cheng Saefan will receive $422 million (about 580.6 billion earned) excluding taxes from the $1.3 billion earnings.

He continued, “I will be able to support my family and my health,” and “I will find myself a good doctor.” He also said, “Will I have time to spend all this money? How long will I live?” The winnings that Cheng Sae-pan will receive are the fourth largest in Powerball history. It is the eighth largest among all lotteries, including Mega Millions. The largest prize in US lottery history is $2.04 billion (about 2.8 trillion won) in the November 2022 Powerball lottery.
