A social media video claiming that a woman in the United States developed kidney stones after eating Buldak-bokkeum noodles is gaining attention.

On the 29th (local time), the Daily Mail reported, “This popular spicy ramen may pose a risk of kidney disease,” referring to a video by Lucy Morad (24), a TikToker who lives in Washington state, USA.

Beauty and health creator Lucy Morad posted on her TikTok on the 14th of last month, ‘Rest in peace, Buldak. I uploaded a short video called ‘I’ll miss you, but my kidneys won’t miss you.’ Along with this, hashtags such as ‘#kidney stone’ and ‘#mukbang’ were also written.

The woman released a video of herself receiving treatment in a hospital, mentioning the brand name of a spicy stir-fried ramen, a Korean product. As of 12 PM on the 30th, the video had more than 17.8 million views.

Morad fell in love with the hot chicken stir-fried noodles made by a Korean company and has been eating them every week for six months. Then, he recently visited the emergency room with severe abdominal pain and cramps, and upon examination, it was confirmed that the pain was caused by kidney stones and complications. Kidney stones are a condition where stones form in the kidneys, and in severe cases, can lead to urinary stones.

“Over the past few months, I’ve been eating more and more of this ramen,” Morad said. “It appears that ‘spicy ramen’ was the cause of the stones that caused the cramps,” he said, adding, “he also showed symptoms of hematuria before visiting the hospital.”

About this, said Dr. David Schusterman, a urologist in New York, USA, “The popular ‘very spicy ramen’ can threaten kidney health. “In particular, the ramen contains half the recommended daily amount of salt,” he warned.

Sodium per serving of Buldak Bokkeum Ramen is 1280 mg. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends consuming less than 2300 mg of sodium per day.

Morad’s video received about 1.57 million likes and 12,000 comments. Netizens who saw this said, “I drink 1 liter of water after eating spicy chicken noodles. So I think it’s fine.” “I’m a person who eats ramen often, but last year I ate Buldakbokkeum ramen and got really sick. There were reactions like “I’m going to throw up all night” and “I’ll live like I’ve never seen this video.”
