Americus Couple Honor Cancer Warriors at Phoebe Sumter’s ‘Lights of Love’ Tree Lighting Ceremony

November 18, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Scott and Sherry Ivey, a couple from Americus, Georgia, will play a central role in the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center’s tree lighting ceremony. They will light the “Lights of Love” tree to honor local cancer patients and their families. This event will feature thousands of lights dedicated to loved ones.

The ceremony will be held at the main hospital entrance on December 12 at 6 p.m. Guests can purchase a light for the tree, with donations going to support oncology patients currently undergoing treatment at the center.

Scott and Sherry Ivey both survived cancer. They first met over 40 years ago as students at Georgia Southwestern. They have raised three children and are active members of Americus First Baptist Church. Sherry was diagnosed with breast cancer the day before Christmas Eve in 2013. Scott received a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma five and a half years later.

What is the significance of the “Lights of Love” tree at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center’s ⁤Tree Lighting Ceremony?

Interview with Scott and Sherry Ivey: Honoring Hope at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center’s Tree Lighting Ceremony

News Directory 3: Thank you for joining us today, Scott and Sherry. As you prepare to light the “Lights of Love” ⁤tree at the upcoming ceremony, can you share what this moment means to you?

Scott ‌Ivey: Absolutely.⁣ Lighting the tree‌ is incredibly special for us. It’s not just a symbol⁢ of our⁤ journey but also a reminder of the resilience of so⁢ many local cancer patients and their families. We’re honored to be part ⁣of this event and to give⁤ back to the⁤ community that supported⁢ us during our battles with cancer.

Sherry Ivey: Yes, it truly is a heartfelt occasion. When we were both⁢ going through our treatments, we felt ⁣such a strong sense of community around us. This tree lighting feels like‍ a way to honor not only our journey but also to stand in solidarity with current patients.

News Directory 3: You both‍ have faced significant health challenges. Sherry, could you tell us about your experiences when you were diagnosed with breast cancer?

Sherry Ivey: My diagnosis came just before Christmas in 2013, and it was ⁢overwhelming. I remember feeling fear and uncertainty, but what got me through was the incredible support from Scott, our children, ⁢and our church ‌community. I learned how ‍important it is‌ to lean on⁤ others during tough times.

Scott Ivey: I ⁣echo that sentiment. My journey began five and a ⁣half years after Sherry’s diagnosis when I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. We both went through the ⁤emotional and physical toll of cancer treatment,⁢ but we never faced it alone. We always had our family and ‍friends backing us up.

News ‍Directory 3: What message do you hope to convey‌ to others who may be currently battling cancer?

Scott Ivey: The ⁢main⁢ message is one of hope. Cancer can⁤ be daunting, but it’s crucial to stay positive and focus on every small⁤ victory. Celebrate the little things, lean on your support system, and never underestimate the power of community.

Sherry⁢ Ivey: Yes, and I’d add that ⁣you’re never alone in this fight. There are so many resources and people willing to help. Each light on⁣ that tree represents love and hope, and we want everyone facing cancer to know that they’re in our thoughts and prayers.

News Directory ⁢3: Lastly, how do you feel about being able to share your story ⁣with others at the ceremony?

Sherry Ivey: We’re grateful for the opportunity. Sharing our journey is a way to connect with ⁢others who may feel isolated in their experiences. We want to encourage them that there’s life beyond ⁣a cancer diagnosis.

Scott ⁤Ivey:‍ It’s a chance to thank all those who supported us throughout our fights, including⁤ the incredible healthcare team at Phoebe Sumter. We look⁢ forward to seeing everyone on December 12 and lighting that tree together.

News Directory 3: Thank you, Scott and Sherry, for sharing your inspiring story. We‍ look forward to⁣ the ceremony and the many⁤ lights that will shine in⁤ honor of love ⁢and hope.

Now cancer-free, the couple will share their journey and encourage others facing cancer. They will express gratitude to their family, friends, and healthcare teams during the ceremony.
