Valeria Karpylenko originally studied journalism and was a teacher for several years. It was involved in the defense of its homeland for the first time in 2014, when the Russian army occupied a large part of the Ukrainian territory without significant resistance and an effective response from the West. After the annexation of Ukrainian territories, she applied to join the Azov regiment under the code name “Nava”, where she served three years of military service between 2015 and 2017, went to civilian life for a while, and later returned to the Azov regiment. She became known thanks to her touching wedding in May 2022 with fellow soldier Andriy during the heaviest shelling of the Azovstal steelworks by the Russian army. A few days after the wedding, Andriy was wounded by a piece of artillery ammunition during a Russian bombardment.
