De Wallen, the old town of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, is home to the world famous “Red Light District”. In the neon windows on both sides of the canal, sex workers wait for customers to come to them. However, Mayor Femke Halsema plans to move the red light district away from the city center and establish new erotic centers in the southern suburbs, boasting better entertainment facilities and giving more space to sex workers.

According to reports from Agence France-Presse and the British Daily Star, the Dewaren district, where the red light district is located, is located in the center of the city, but ordinary people also live here. For a long time, local people have complained that not only the noises are so loud that they can’t sleep at night, but they can also encounter drunks or idiots on the side of the road at any time, which makes local people unbearable. Therefore, the current mayor Hassema intends to remove the red light area from the De Wallen area, so that Amsterdam can get rid of its image as a “sin city” and at the same time reduce the number of tourists and misbehavior in the area.

Amsterdam city authorities have stated that a “new erotic center” is expected to be established on the Europa Avenue in the southern suburbs, where the red light district will be located after it has been moved from the De Wallen area. The city government has also promised to provide 100 rooms for sex workers in the new erotic centre, as well as restaurants, theaters and bars, in order to build the center into a “safe, high quality” erotic centre.

In addition, the Amsterdam city government also mentioned in a statement that “this option will be presented to the city council early next year” and it is expected that the new erotic center will be completed within seven years. However, this plan also provoked a backlash from some people, especially those living near Europa Avenue, who expressed uneasy feelings. On the other hand, Mariska Majoor, a 54-year-old retired sex worker who is now the head of a sex work consultation centre, said about the relocation of the red light area, that many sex workers feel that they are being ” Hide”.
