PNG’s Mobile Internet Prices Stay Steady in 2024, Despite Minor Changes
Papua New Guinea’s mobile internet prices remained largely stable in 2024, with minor tweaks to some offerings from the country’s three main network operators, according to a recent data analysis by a team of Australian and Papua New Guinean researchers.
After a fluctuation following Vodafone’s entry into the PNG market in 2022, prices have leveled off. Between January 1 and November 11, 2024, the three operators—Vodafone, Digicel, and Telikom—kept prices mostly unchanged.
Vodafone’s Data Pricing
Vodafone’s data prices have been consistent since it started operating in 2022. Customers get better value for money with longer-lasting data bundles. The 30-day bundle saw an improvement, while the 3-day option decreased slightly in value after its introduction. Promotions like "Supa Sunday" and Christmas offers, doubling or tripling data purchases, remain popular.
Digicel’s Price Fluctuations
Digicel’s internet prices stayed mostly stagnant until Vodafone’s market entry, after which Digicel improved its offerings. In April 2024, Digicel readjusted its plans, ceasing 3-day bundles and improving the value of 1-day, 7-day, and 30-day plans. Promotions targeting smartphone purchases were also introduced.
Telikom’s Pricing Trends
Telikom prices were consistent until Vodafone’s arrival, with bundles improving briefly before settling at previous levels. Throughout 2024, Telikom’s bundle values remained better than in previous years, with the most accessible 3-day and 30-day bundles improving in value.
Looking Ahead
Though prices have stabilized, some high-end options remain affordable only for certain customers. As the Pacific region explores satellite internet access (like Starlink and Kacific), it’s uncertain whether mobile internet prices will be influenced in the future. For now, consumers enjoy price stability, allowing them to plan their data usage while expecting improved value. The research team will continue monitoring pricing trends.
