Anchorage Faces First Freeze As Arctic Air Moves Across Alaska

Southcentral Showers Give Way to Cooler Temperatures and Freezing Nights

Wet weather moved through Anchorage and the Matanuska and Susitna valleys, leaving snowcapped peaks visible after morning showers tapered off. While the afternoon brings partly cloudy skies to Southcentral, high temperatures are gradually cooling from the 50s into the 40s as the week progresses. Anchorage faces its first official freeze of the season by the end of the week, with overnight lows closing in on freezing daily. The Kenai Peninsula remains dry despite morning cloud cover, while Southeast Alaska deals with persistent rainfall. Juneau and areas southward are tracking between 0.2 and 0.5 inches of rain through midweek, though Southeast temperatures remain near 50 degrees as the region sits largely out of the direct path of Arctic air.

Interior and North Slope Regions Prepare for Accumulating Snow

Interior Alaska and the North Slope are collecting light snow accumulation as low temperatures fall into the 20s. Fairbanks remains slightly too warm for snow accumulation, experiencing a damp Tuesday with cloudy skies and a light drizzle, though overnight snowfall chances increase between Wednesday night and Thursday. High elevations across the Interior could see 1 to 3 inches of snow through the middle of the week. On the North Slope, Anaktuvuk Pass is tracking 0.5 to 1.5 inches of accumulation, with additional rounds of snow expected into early Wednesday morning as temperatures hover in the 20s.

Western Alaska Coastal Regions Feel Arctic Air Impacts

Western Alaska is holding onto widespread cloud cover as Arctic air stretches across the coastline, cooling daytime highs into the low 40s from Kotzebue down to Dillingham. The Seward Peninsula is seeing brief periods of sunshine, and dry weather is expected to hold through Wednesday before light showers arrive from Cold Bay to Saint George along the Aleutian Chain.
