The Museum Victoria Research Institute has identified ancient ant-eating mammal fossils in its collection, marking a significant paleontological discovery that sheds light on early mammalian evolution in Australia.

The fossils, belonging to a prehistoric mammal adapted for feeding on ants and termites, were uncovered during a routine review of the institute’s paleontological archives. Researchers confirmed the specimens date back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago, based on geological context and comparative anatomy.

Scientists at the institute noted that the fossils exhibit specialized skeletal features consistent with myrmecophagy, including elongated snouts, reduced dentition, and robust forelimbs adapted for digging into insect nests. These traits suggest the animal occupied a niche similar to modern-day echidnas or pangolins, though We see not directly related to either group.

The discovery is particularly significant because it represents one of the earliest known examples of ant-eating specialization in mammals from the southern continents. Prior to this find, evidence of such adaptations in Cretaceous-aged mammals was scarce, especially in the Gondwanan landmasses that once included Australia, Antarctica, and South America.

Researchers emphasized that the fossils were not newly excavated but had been part of the museum’s collection for decades. Their significance was only recognized through recent re-examination using advanced imaging techniques and updated comparative datasets from global fossil records.
