[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] Research shows that ancient grains can help manage diabetes.

A study on the effects of ancient grains on diabetes-related parameters was published in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Diseases.

In recent times more and more people are choosing “ancient cereals” for their health. Unlike refined grains, ancient grains contain the nutrients found in grains and are known to be beneficial for various cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Representative ancient grains include oats, brown rice, millet, sorghum, and millet.

Researchers analyzed diet and health data from 1,809 diabetes patients in 29 randomized, controlled trials to determine whether ancient grains could help manage diabetes. The average length of time since the study subjects were diagnosed with diabetes was 14 years, and most of them were receiving oral diabetes medications or insulin injection treatment.

The researchers used specialized software to combine and analyze data such as weight, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. In most studies, ancient grains had positive effects on insulin levels, HbA1c, fasting blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.

In particular, oats significantly improved cholesterol levels and fasting blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. In the case of brown rice, glycated hemoglobin and body mass index (BMI) improved, but there was no effect on blood sugar or cholesterol levels. Millet has been shown to be effective in reducing weight, but several studies have shown conflicting results, so caution was needed in interpreting the results.

Although the health benefits of chia seeds are well known, the sample size of related studies was small, so the diabetes-improving effect was not significant.

Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that ancient grains are beneficial in managing diabetes.
