Anne Burrell, the celebrity chef and Food Network mainstay, has died at age 55. Police discovered her “unconscious and unresponsive” at her residence June 17, according too People. The cause of death is currently undetermined.
Burrell’s family released a statement describing her as a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother and friend whose smile “lit up every room.” They added, “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us,her warmth,spirit,and boundless love remain eternal.”
A Food Network staple,Anne Burrell hosted “Secrets of a Restaurant Chef” and “Worst Cooks in America,” and frequently appeared on “Chopped” and “Food Network Star.” The food Network issued a statement July 17, calling Burrell a remarkable culinary talent who shared the importance of food and the joy of a appetizing meal. “Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss,” the network said.
Born in Cazenovia, N.Y., in 1969, Anne Burrell graduated from Canisius College before attending the Culinary Institute of America and the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners. She honed her skills in New York restaurants like Savoy and Felidia. Her television career began in 2005 as Mario Batali’s sous-chef on “Iron Chef America,” where her vibrant personality shone. From 2008 to 2012, she starred in “Secrets of a Restaurant Chef,” teaching viewers how to cook like professionals.
Burrell aimed to demystify cooking, telling Canisius College Alumni Magazine in 2008, “I try to take the fear factor out and let people know that it doesn’t have to be this awesome, daunting experience. Let’s just simplify it and make awesome stuff, so you feel good about it and than people can tell you how great you are!” She coached contestants on “Worst Cooks in America” for 27 seasons, from 2010 to 2024, leading her team to victory 15 times. She married Stuart Claxton in 2021 and recently competed on Food network’s “House of Knives” in 2025.
